Our History
Founded in 1886 by Albert G. Brock (1862-1938). The Albert G. Brock Company has a proud history of 125 years serving Nantucket Island and its residents. Four generations of the Brock family have contributed to the growth of the agency.
Our agency history begins with Albert G. Brock who was born in 1862. He began as an acting agent for New York Life Insurance in 1884 and joined briefly with Charles H. Coffin in 1885 to represent other types of insurance. The following year, 1886, was decidedly a busy year for Mr. Brock. He became cashier of the Pacific National Bank, began The Albert G. Brock Company out of his home on Liberty Street and married a ship captain's daughter, Annie Cartwright.
The Albert G. Brock Company continued at the 36 Liberty Street until 1915 when Mr. Brock became president of the Pacific National Bank and moved it there. The agency remained at the bank for 38 years. Albert Brock not only spearheaded changes at the Pacific National Bank, he was also involved in community endeavors. He championed an electric fire alarm system, which replaced the watchmen stationed in the tall church towers. As owner of the Citizen's Gas, Electric and Power Company he improved their facilities and extended service to Siasconset and other parts of the island. He also acted as an officer of The Coffin School and The Nantucket Institute for Savings.
Albert's only son, William Cartwright Brock, joined the agency in 1929 after serving as manager of the Citizen's Gas, Electric and Power Company. William and Albert represented over 40 national insurance companies by the time of Albert's retirement. Under William's leadership, the company moved to 60 Main Street, the west half of the Philip H. Folger House.
William's only son, Albert G. Brock, was born in February 1919 and joined the firm in 1947. As his father and grandfather before him, he was educated in the Island schools and has served his community in any capacities. He took over leadership of the agency in the early 1960's, served as a director of The Pacific National Bank, President of the Pacific Club and Director of the Conservation Foundation. In 1962 he and his wife, Amy Duponte Brock, purchased the Reed Hardware Store building at 53 Main Street and moved the agency to that location.
John D. Brock is the fourth generation to contribute to the growth of The Albert G. Brock Company. He joined the agency full time in 1975 after working with USF&G as a Commercial Lines Underwriter in heir Boston and New York offices. Throughout the years, John has always been creative in his approach toward service to the insurance industry, his customers and his community. He proves himself innovative by contributing to the creation of new products and programs in areas here needs are not being met. John became owner and President of The Albert G. Brock Company in 2003.
