There are three major types of claims:
Property Claim
It is important to protect your property from continuing damage. You will be compensated for emergency repairs made to your property in order to secure it from further damage. An example would be putting plywood over a broken window to prevent rain coming. In the event of serious damage from fire, smoke or water you should contact a specialist in this area. See our list of those who are familiar with the unique demands of serving Nantucket.

Automobile Claim
If you are involved in an automobile accident in which there are injuries involved, and you are not able to contact Marcia, it is very important that you directly contact your insurance company. Please see this list of companies and contact information.
For most automobile accidents you will most likely have to fill out a report to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The RMV Automobile Crash Report Form is available here.
Workers Compensation
You will need to fill out a Workers Compensation First Report of Injury Form
For further information about Workers Compensation claims please see the Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents.
FAQ
One of my large trees fell on my house during a windstorm. Does my homeowner insurance cover the cost to have the tree removed?
Your homeowners insurance will pay, under certain conditions, for the removal of a tree up to the limits provided in your policy. Your tree must have fallen by the perils of windstorm, hail, weight of ice, snow or sleet. The tree must also have fallen on and damaged a covered structure such as your house, garage, or cottage.
My vehicle was damaged by a hit and run driver. I have collision coverage, but do I have to pay the deductible even if it wasn't my fault? Will I be surcharged?
When you vehicle is damaged by a hit and run your deductible will apply, as the company has no one to subrogate against. To avoid being surcharged it is necessary for you to report the accident to the local police, get a copy of the report, and forward it to your agent or insurance company.
My daughter is a listed driver on my auto policy. She was in a minor accident that was appraised at $850.00. We have a $500 deductible. Will she receive a Surcharge Notice?
No. Surcharges are applied only when the insurance company has to pay out more than $500 on the loss. With the new competitive market, however, insurance companies are now "permitted to determine when and how they will impose surcharges for at fault accidents and traffic violations".
We have a house on the mainland and one on Nantucket, both on homeowner policies. We rented the Nantucket house to some friends for a several months and there was a fire. Am I covered?
This depends on the company with whom you are insured. Most companies have a restriction on the amount of time a property can be rented. If the house is rented on a regular basis, the property should be on a Dwelling Fire Policy. Circumstances would determine whether there is coverage. Was this a one-time rental? Do you rent the house on a regular basis? How many months do you rent it for?
